The Academy’s
Music Program include instilling in our
students, a love of music, an understanding
of basic music concepts, knowledge of some
of the world’s greatest composers
and a proficiency in a musical intrument.
Right from the start
and beginning in Pre-1, students are introduced
to such concepts of music as “high
and low,” “soft and loud,”
“fast and slow,” and “happy
and sad”. They also learn about composers
such as Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev and study
some of their most famous compositions.
“The Nutcracker,” “Sleeping
Beauty,” “Swan Lake,”
and “Peter and the Wolf.” The
Music instructor recounts the story of each
and explains the kinds of instruments used
by the orchestras. To reinforce what the
child has learned the teacher then has the
children actually act out the story. They
also play such rhythm instruments as xylophones,
bells, sticks, tambourines and maracas.
As with our other specialty
subjects, as the students get older, they
learn about the lives and works of such
composers as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and
Schumann. The Music Instructor also teaches
them about various musical instruments,
from the 16th century through today. Towards
the end of the 2nd grade, the students begin
to learn how to play the recorder. Second
through 7th grade students also have the
opportunity to learn to play almost any
orchestra instrument (violin, flute, clarinet,
drums, cello etc.) through private instruction
after school. |
