Maimonides Academy was founded in 1968 to provide a superior Jewish and general studies education in an atmosphere that emphasizes the unique Sephardic heritage and tradition. The school began with less than 15 students in a few small rooms at the Sephardic Mogen David Synagogue at its original location on Melrose Avenue.

Almost 35 years later, Maimonides Academy is widely acclaimed as one of Los Angeles’ leading educational institutions. From its modest beginnings, the Academy has now more than 260 families and 500 students.

The Sephardic heritage is a treasury of some of the richest and most profound teachings and expressions of the Jewish experience. It has produced many of Judaism’s greatest Rabbis who, for centuries, were the guardians of Torah scholarship. Sephardic history is filled with devotion to idealism and the dedication to spiritual and intellectual growth. Prayers are according to Sephardic tradition, yet children are always made aware of differences in custom and Halacha between the two cultures. At Maimonides, students from all backgrounds feel culturally rewarded by the multi-faceted program to which they are exposed.
